Quick Gluten-Free Phantasialand Review:

There is a lack of gluten-free options at Phantasialand. Apart from a handful of restaurants, options are few and far between. Highly recommended that you pack your own gluten-free food and snacks.

Full Gluten-Free Phantasialand Review:

Good afternoon readers,

Recently I had the pleasure of visiting one of Germany’s top theme parks, Phantasialand. Located just out of Cologne, in the town of Brühl, Phantasialand is well renowned for its immersive theming and one-of-a-kind rollercoasters. For a small park, it sure packs a lot in, and the rides are incredible. But rides are only one part of the theme park experience. If you are going to be there all day it is important you are well fuelled. So, let us explore what gluten-free options are available at Phantasialand.

Well, the short answer to the above question is not much. At a minimum, I would highly recommend you pack some snacks or else you could be in for a very hungry day. Throughout Phantasialand there are a number of food stalls, selling a variety of food and drink. However, none of the stores we asked at could provide coeliac safe food and only a select few could provide gluten-free options. A quick disclaimer that we did not check every store so may have missed something but judging by what was being served (i.e. noodles), I would not hold my breath. For example, one stall in the Fantasy land did have gluten-free pommes, however they were cooked in the same oil as foods containing gluten. The confectionary shop in Rockburgh did have gluten-free lollies and chocolates. Drink wise, there is a store near the entrance to the Fantasy land that did have gluten free hot chocolate and eggnog.

Gluten-Free Service:

The other thing to be aware of, is that staff knowledge of gluten-free varies significantly. Some staff knew exactly what ingredients were used and any chance of cross-contamination while others had no idea and some did not even know what gluten-free was. I found it easier to just ask for the allergen list and figure it out myself than ask directly. Also important to note that allergen lists are only available in German. As someone who cannot read nor speak German, this was easily overcome by using the picture function on the translate app on our phone.

Gluten-Free Phantasialand Restaurants:

There are a couple of restaurants around the park. These are hit and miss. Hotel Ling Boa has some good online reviews, although we never got around to eating here. We also avoided Rutmor’s Taverne, as the reviews online did not sound promising. However, we did try Restaurant Uhrwerk, located in the steam-punk-est area, Rockburgh. During our visit to Phantasialand we stayed onsite at the Charles Lindbergh Hotel (also located in the Rockburgh area), giving us exclusive access to Restaurant Uhrwerk for dinner and breakfast. We were impressed by the food here, and the care taken. Conclusion:

Overall, Phantasialand is not terrific for gluten-free food, and it is highly recommended you are well prepared before visiting. The good thing is that the town of Brühl is located less than a 5-minute drive or a 10-minute bus trip away and has a number of supermarkets with your regular gluten-free options.
