Gluten-Free Restaurant Uhrwerk, Phantasialand Quick Review:

Pros:

  • No reaction.

  • The food at Restaurant Uhrwerk was delicious.

  • Staff are knowledgeable on gluten-free requirements.

  • Dedicated allergens menu.

Cons:

  • Can't guarantee cross contamination.

  • Dinner and breakfast are only available to hotel guests.

A Coeliac Traveller's Tip:

Considering the lack of gluten-free options at Phantasialand, Restaurant Uhrwerk is a great place for gluten-free food. Staff were knowledgeable, and there was a dedicated allergen menu. The three course dinner and buffet breakfast offered to guests at Hotel Charles Lindbergh provide for fulfilling and satisfying meals. However, this is only offered to hotel guests. The restaurant can not guarantee cross contamination, but there was no reaction to any of the food.

Gluten-Free Restaurant Uhrwerk Full Review:

Good morning readers,

During our recent expedition to Germany, we had the pleasure of visiting the well renowned German theme-park, Phantasialand. As part of our visit, we spent one night onsite at the Hotel Charles Lindbergh, a steam-punk inspired hotel located in the middle of the park's Rockburgh Land. Attached to the hotel, is Restaurant Uhrwerk, a steam-punk inspired restaurant, and while staying at Hotel Charles Lindbergh we had the opportunity to have both dinner and breakfast here. So, in this article, lets explore the gluten-free options on offer at Restaurant Uhrwerk.

Note: I have already written a full overview of our time at Phantasialand (The Gluten-Free guide to Phantasialand, Germany), so this article will solely focus on our experiences eating at Restaurant Uhrwerk as part of our stay at Hotel Charles Lindberg.

Hotel Charles Lindbergh and Restaurant Uhrwerk:

To stay at Hotel Charles Lindbergh, you must book a package that includes a number of additional extras. These extras include one fast pass a day onto the popular rollercoaster F.L.Y, a three-course dinner at Restaurant Uhrwerk and a buffet breakfast at the same restaurant. While Restaurant Uhrwerk is open to park guests during the day, it should be noted that having breakfast and dinner here are only available to guests of the hotel.

As we were only staying one night at Hotel Charles Lindbergh, we had dinner on our first day and then breakfast the following morning.

Gluten-Free Dinner at Restaurant Uhrwerk:

Dinner is hosted in Restaurant Uhrwerk and is a three-course affair. When checking into Hotel Charles Lindbergh you are asked to make a reservation at a set time. Our reservation was at 6:30pm.

We found accessing the restaurant for dinner to be a little tricky. As the restaurant closes to park guests at 5pm, when we arrived for our reservation, the main door was locked. Thankfully after a couple of minutes, a waiter realised and we and a few other confused guests were ushered through the restaurant to the bar at the back. The idea is that hotel guests access the restaurant through the back door located in the hotel. The back door leads into the bar first which acts as a waiting room while you wait for your reservation to be ready. However, for one reason or another we did not realise this and rocked up at the main entrance.

Once in the bar, we were met by a staff member, who confirmed our reservation as well as our dietary requirements. It was here that we were also informed that our food may take longer due to ensuring that it would be gluten-free. This was no issue for either of us, and we appreciated the heads up. We then waited a few minutes in the bar, while our seats were prepared.

Next, we were taken into the main dining room and seated. Accessing the menu was easy through a QR code, which also had a dedicated allergens menu. It is always nice having a separate allergens menu, as it makes it much clearer what is gluten-free.

While not having the same range of options as the normal menu, the allergen menu still had a selection of dishes for each course. It needs to be noted that the lactose-free pasta listed on the allergen menu for main course is not gluten-free and only lactose free. There is a label on the menu, but it is easy to overlook and miss.

Gluten-Free Starters:

For starters there were two gluten-free choices:

  • Light Green Journey: Fruity-fresh Poké Bowl with chicken breast, mango, salsa, edamame, green asparagus, zoodles (carrot noodles), wild herbs, sesame coriander and passionfruit dressing.

  • Leonardo's Tatar: Premium Beef Tartare (80 grams). beef tartar with Dijon mustard, tomato salsa, avocado on gluten-free bread.

We decided to try both. The Poké Bowl was very fresh, with a good mixture of flavours. The chicken and mango made for a great combination. The portion size was big and could have nearly been a main. Out of the two starters this was our clear favourite, and even one of our favourite dishes out of the whole meal.

The beef tartar was nice and had some strong flavours. But compared to the poké bowl, the portion sizes looked quite small, and it just did not impress us as much at the poké bowl.

Gluten-free Main Couse:

For main course there were again two choices to choose from:

  • The Major: Roast beef from the grill with sea salt, eggplant-zucchini vegetables, egg sunny side up and wild herb salad and crispy French fries.

  • The Commander: Grilled Poulard breast with sea salt and asparagus vegetables and crispy French fires.

Like before we ordered one of each. Both mains were cooked well and had some terrific flavour. The beef and Poulard breast were nice and tender, while the salads accompanying each dish filled out the meal well. The French fries were crispy and crunchy, with plenty of seasoning. We enjoyed our mains a lot and would recommend both.

Gluten-free Dessert:

Finally, we had two choices for dessert.

  • Frida's Fruit Bowl: Wonderfully colorful selection of seasonal fruits.

  • Barbie's Berry-Chocolate Mix: Strawberry sorbet with berry-compote and dark chocolate.

As both of us wanted something a little more than fruit, we decided to both get the Barbie’s Berry Chocolate Mix. This dish was somewhat underwhelming. The dark chocolate was quite rich, and while the berry sorbet was bursting with flavour, you only got a small scoop of it. The portion size overall felt quite small, and it just needed something extra to fill it out. Still, the dessert was enjoyable and capped off a particularly satisfying meal. Importantly there was no reaction to any of the food and wait times ended up being not that long.

Gluten-free Breakfast:

Like dinner, upon checking in to the hotel you will also need to book a time in for breakfast. Breakfast is your traditional buffet that you would encounter at most hotels. There is hot food (think your bacon, eggs, sausages), a range of cold meats, fruits, yoghurt, pastries, and a surprisingly wide range of spreads. For drinks there is juices, milks, and a self-serve coffee machine. Allergens are clearly listed on a little placard in front of each item.

Upon arrival, we notified staff that we were coeliacs. This was important as it meant that we were also given three gluten-free rolls each.

Like any buffet there is always a risk of cross contamination. However, we never encountered any issues, nor did we have any reaction to the meal. This may have been aided by the fact that the restaurant did not feel busy. The food itself was delicious and was the perfect start to a day in the park. The bread rolls in particular were a highlight.

Conclusion:

Overall, the food at Restaurant Uhrwerk was fantastic and topped off what was a genuinely fantastic stay at Hotel Charles Lindbergh. No reactions were experienced at either dinner or breakfast, and the selection of options was sufficient. As there is a lack of gluten-free options at Phantasialand it was great to have two enjoyable and fulfilling meals.
