Singapore Airlines Gluten-free Quick Fact Sheet:
The Good:
No gluten reaction experienced.
Flight attendants check in before take-off to ensure the correct dietary request has been received. After this, they place a sticker on the back of your seat, clearly notifying all crew members.
The food was varied, tasty, and enjoyable.
Häagen-Dazs ice-cream isn't offered on all flights, but it is a highlight when it is.
Special dietary meals are served before the main meal service.
Areas of Improvement:
On some flights, meals could be better spaced out. On a flight from Singapore to Seattle, the two-meal services had been completed when there was still over 5 hours of the flight remaining.
Snacks served between meals are not always gluten-free. These are offered to all passengers regardless of dietary requirements, so always double-check before eating.
Must Know:
You need to pre-book any special dietary meals (including gluten-free meals) through the Singapore Airlines website. For most destinations, this must be done at least 24 hours prior to boarding; however, some airports require 32 hours’ notice, and a select few require 56 hours’ notice. You must also select a gluten-free meal for each individual flight in your booking.
While the meal itself is made entirely from gluten-free ingredients, the airline describes it as a gluten intolerant meal due to the risk of cross-contamination.
Conclusion:
Overall, the gluten-free meals onboard Singapore Airlines are good. The food is tasty and enjoyable, and over the course of five flights, I did not experience any reactions. While there is a risk of cross-contamination, gluten-free meals are served before the main meal service to help mitigate this risk.
It is still recommended to bring your own snacks, particularly on long-haul flights, as meal spacing is not always ideal. Additionally, snacks handed out between meals are not always gluten-free, making it advisable to pack your own as a backup.
